What does meditation do? It is a millenary technique to reconnect with the deeper levels of our being (soul, spirit) that results in mind transcending ordinary (dual) and the infinite expansion of consciousness.
Meditation is a form of holistic medicine. It is a reliable and simple to balance the human being in terms of physical, emotional and spiritual.
Although known for a long time only in the East, where it was commonly used as a healing technique associated to Ayurvedic medicine, Tibetan medicine and Buddhism. Today many doctors prescribe meditation as a healing technique liberating physical and emotional suffering. As meditation is good for lowering blood pressure in case of asthma, angina, cardiac arrhythmia, stress, insomnia, anxiety, panic attacks. All meditative practices have one thing in common: calming waves of the mind so that we can penetrate deep into our hearts and become only a witness to any thoughts that arise in the mind, or sensations that occur in the body or emotions that are trying to grab attention.
When the mind is calm and focused, it does not react even with the memories of the past and is not concerned about the future (the two major sources of stress in our lives with huge negative impact on health) but it is focused only in the present moment, making us feel free, happy and to have access to our source of permanent healing that lies within us.
From a medical standpoint, this equilibrium with ourselves and the universe, creates in our body calcium ions. Calcium ion is an intracellular messenger used by numerous hormones and neurotransmitters, enabling multiple cellular functions. Our brain acts as a sophisticated telecommunications antenna using oscillatory signals that are millions of times smaller than the cell membrane potential.
A meditative state produce remarkable changes in the hormonal system. For example, from the upper portion of the small intestine (the area called “Peyer’s patches”) the enzyme alkaline “chyle” is released in the lymphatic system throughout the body. This enzyme “chyle” alkaline has stimulating effect on muscles and brain, organizing “thinking” process, with effects invigorating and relaxing alike. what does meditation do
In 1960, a study by Benson and Wallace Harvard Medical School, demonstrated physiological changes that occur during meditation:
-decreases oxygen consumption after a few minutes of meditation, to below 20% below normal.
-decreases the rhythm of heart.
-blood pressure drops, the effects being felt especially in people with known high blood pressure before beginning meditation.
-decrease anxiety and muscle tension, can be distinguished by lowering skin resistance to electric currents.
-engages predominance parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for producing self-healing in the body.
During anxiety states there is an increase in blood lactic acid. This product is released into the blood after skeletal muscle metabolism. In meditation this compound decreases by 4 times compared with subjects who did not meditate.
