What Is Hatha Yoga?

March 5, 2016 / no comments, on Yoga basics

What is hatha yoga

There are many different types of yoga and it can be difficult to figure out which particular one is right for you. Most styles of yoga are based on the same basic yoga poses (called Asanas), however the experience of one style can be radically different than another.# what is hatha yoga

One of the most popular forms of yoga is the Hatha Yoga – the yoga of balance, as “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha), the word “hatha” can be translated in two ways: “willful” or “forceful,” or the yoga of activity and meditation.

Hatha Yoga is the foundation of all Yoga styles. It incorporates Asanas (postures), Pranayama (regulated breathing), meditation (Dharana & Dhyana) and kundalini (Laya Yoga) into a complete system that can be used to achieve enlightenment or self-realization. It has become very popular in the United States as source of exercise and stress management.Hatha-yoga-1

Hatha practices are designed to align and calm your body, mind, and spirit in preparation for meditation. The ideal way to practice the Hatha Yoga poses (asanas) is to approach the practice session in a calm, meditative mood. Sit quietly for a few moments, then begin the session slowly, with control and grace, being inwardly aware as the body performs the various poses selected for the practice session.

The key is to focus on breathing, If one can master breath, then the mastery of mind is within reach. This mindfulness has real-world benefits: Studies has shown that people who practice Hatha yoga once or twice a week recover from stress faster.

Hatha Yoga is a good place to start on the path of yoga. Today, the term, hatha, is used in such a broad way that it is difficult to know what a particular hatha yoga class will be like. In most cases, however, it will be relatively gentle, slow and great for beginners  who prefer a more relaxed style where they hold poses longer. It can vary a lot, so it is a good idea to call the studio before attending the class.

Remember, do not overdo or try to compete with others. Self-control, breath, take it easy and enjoy.
